Creating a Future‑Ready Workplace Designed for Belonging

Madison Gas and Electric (MG&E) faced a common challenge: a workplace that no longer supported how its people worked or how the organization wanted to be perceived. The office environment had remained largely unchanged for 20 years and was dominated by tall, maze-like cubicles that blocked natural light and created a dark, cramped environment.

A few years prior, MG&E took an initial step toward change by updating select collaboration spaces. This introduced more open, flexible areas designed to support teamwork and connection. That shift made it clear that the existing workplace was out of alignment with how people wanted to work. Those early updates ultimately became the catalyst for a larger, more comprehensive office renovation, one that would extend that same level of functionality, energy, and modern appeal across the entire workplace.

The Challenge

As MG&E looked to the future, embracing hybrid work and competing for the next generation of employees, it became clear the space needed more than an update. MG&E wanted a workplace that felt open, welcoming, and modern, still respecting the need for privacy and focus.

Our Approach

LERDAHL partnered with MG&E in a collaborative process that began with in-depth programming sessions. The LERDAHL team worked to design each floor, thoughtfully integrating architectural elements with furniture solutions.

A significant focus throughout the project was flexibility, designing not only for current staff, but also for the “future MG&E employee.” Spaces were planned with adaptability in mind, allowing departments, teams, and individuals to grow and shift over time.

The Solution

The transformed workplace replaces closed‑off cubicles with an open, light‑filled environment that supports a variety of work styles. A strategic mix of open workstations, private spaces, collaboration areas, and amenities creates balance across the building.

Many employees transitioned from private exterior offices into open workstations, an intentional shift that required thoughtful planning and strong change management. Through the integration of furniture, DIRTT wall systems, and sound masking, the new environment delivers both comfort and privacy while maintaining visual openness and connection.

Workplace design features included:
  • Open office workstations with enhanced acoustic and visual privacy
  • Private offices, focus spaces, and meeting rooms
  • Collaborative zones and shared amenities
  • Integrated sound masking
  • Flexible layouts designed to adapt over time
  • Wellness Room

The Results: A Modern Workplace Built for Growth and Talent

As each phase of the renovation has been completed, MG&E has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from employees.

Today, the workplace feels brighter, more welcoming, and significantly more aligned with MG&E’s culture and future vision. The renovated office has become a powerful tool for attracting new employees and encouraging existing staff to spend more time in the office, supporting connection, collaboration, and belonging in a hybrid work environment.

With its dramatic transformation, strong partnership, and future‑focused design, MG&E’s workplace stands as a clear example of how trust and thoughtful strategy can create a space that truly supports the people who use it.
